Roundtable on Data Protection at European Smart Borders

09.12.2019

The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law warmly invites to the event "Roundtable on Data Protection at European Smart Borders", which will take place on the 9th of December from 12:00 p.m to 06:00 p.m.

The currently expanding landscape of EU Smart Borders requires a thorough analysis of its impact on the area of data protection. Technologies and processes employed at the Smart Borders are almost entirely fuelled by the personal data of third-country nationals entering and leaving the EU. As the number of foreign travellers continues to grow, and the European Commission predicts that numbers could reach 295 million by 2025, it is necessary to scrutinise the impact of the large-scale databases of personal data in the EU on the scope of the right to data protection. Special attention needs to be given to internal dataflows within the Smart Borders environment, implemented safeguards as well as to secondary use of data for law enforcement purposes. With the help of our distinguished guests, we aim to gain a comprehensive picture of how, and under which restrictions, personal data are protected at European external borders.
