Professor Michael Waibel appointed Editor-in-Chief of the EJIL

13.02.2026

Professor Michael Waibel (University of Vienna) has joined the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) as Co-Editors-in-Chief, working alongside Professor Sarah Nouwen (University of Cambridge).

On behalf of EJIL, Professor Sarah Nouwen highlights,

“EJIL is absolutely delighted that Professor Michael Waibel has agreed to join the editorial team as Co-Editor-in-Chief. Michael is a phenomenal general international lawyer with a strong specialisation in international economic law, which nicely complements the expertise already available in the editorial team. Michael is also a true institution-builder, and we look forward to working together in the years ahead.”

Since its founding in 1990, EJIL has established itself as one of the leading journals in international law, fostering dialogue between theory and practice. Publishing approximately seventy articles annually and reaching a global readership of up to 50,000 views per article, EJIL is a central forum for scholarly debate – reaching additional audiences through its blog EJIL: Talk! and EJIL: The Podcast!. The impact of EJIL is best conveyed through the words of Professor James Crawford, who described it as “the most lively and interesting quarterly in the field of general international law”.

Reflecting on his appointment, Professor Waibel said:

“It is an honour to assume this leadership role at EJIL. I am deeply grateful to the selection panel and the EJIL Board of Management for the trust they have placed in me. I am excited to build on EJIL’s tradition of exceptional scholarship and to work closely with Professor Sarah Nouwen, our editorial team, and the broader EJIL ecosystem.”

Professor Waibel’s scholarship combines international economic law, sovereign debt, and international dispute settlement with classic areas of public international law. As Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Economic Law (2021-2026) and the ICSID Reports (since 2018), he brings extensive editorial experience to this leadership role at EJIL.

Before joining the University of Vienna in 2019, Professor Waibel served as Senior Lecturer and Co-Deputy Director at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge. He has also held visiting appointments at Harvard, St. Gallen, and Vanderbilt Law School, among others, and has published widely, including in leading journals such as AJIL, EJIL, and JIEL. His academic work has had a substantial impact, reflected in several distinctions, most notably the Deák Prize of the American Society of International Law, the Book Prize of the European Society of International Law, and a Leverhulme Prize.
