Democracy and the Legitimization to Tax - The GREIT Conference 2024 centered on the challenges posed by the evolving multi-layered community structure and its implications for our understanding of democracy and the legitimacy of taxation.

Over the course of two days, scholars from various disciplines explored the effects of globalization on states’ fiscal sovereignty, the concept of allegiance, and tax justice. The first panel delved into the role of representation in the justification of taxation. The initial part of the panel addressed core democratic principles, while the second part extended the discussion to examine how these principles apply within the European context. The second panel focused on the nexus – so the supposed justification of imposing taxes on people and how these factors are influenced by globalization. The third panel widened the view and focus on the domestic and European financing and the spending side and their impact on justice. The final panel looked towards the future and proposed alternative models for financing our investment needs.
